Thermal Roll Sizing Guide for Shopping Malls, Supermarkets, Fashion and Cosmetics Retailers
Retail chains face a unique sourcing challenge: standardizing roll specifications across dozens or hundreds of stores with different POS hardware generations. Here’s how to approach it.
The Multi-Store Standardization Challenge
Large retail chains often accumulate multiple POS hardware generations over time — different store openings, renovations and equipment refreshes mean not every location uses identical terminals. Before standardizing procurement, audit actual roll specs in use across a representative sample of stores rather than assuming uniformity.
Where full standardization isn’t feasible, most chains settle on 2-3 core specifications that cover 90%+ of their store fleet, sourcing outliers separately.
Considerations by Retail Category
Supermarkets: High transaction volume, often itemized receipts favoring 80mm width and larger diameter rolls to reduce change frequency
Fashion retail: Lower transaction volume per store but often needs receipt paper compatible with return/exchange policies printed on the receipt
Cosmetics / mall kiosks: Frequently mobile or space-constrained POS setups favoring compact 57mm rolls
