Why Is Your POS Roll Printing Slow, Jamming, or Fading?
We break down the 4 most common thermal roll problems and their real causes — in most cases, the issue isn’t the device, it’s the paper.
1. Print Is Faint or Not Appearing at All
Likely Causes: The roll may be loaded facing the wrong way (thermal coating should face outward, not inward), the coating’s sensitivity may not match your printer head’s temperature, or you may be using low-quality or old stock paper.
Fix: Check that the roll is loaded in the correct orientation. If the problem persists, try a quality thermal roll with a sensitivity grade matched to your device brand.
2. Paper Jams Frequently
Likely Causes: The most common cause is an incorrect roll width for your device — even a 1mm difference (e.g. 57mm roll instead of 56mm) can cause the paper to bind against the print head and feed at an angle. An unevenly or loosely wound roll can also cause this.
Fix: Confirm the exact size your device requires and use a roll with a guaranteed net length and consistent winding.
3. Receipt Printing Has Slowed Down
Likely Causes: Paper dust or residue buildup on the print head, or lower-grade paper coating causing the print head to work harder and slower.
Fix: Clean the print head regularly per the manufacturer’s guidance. Using dust-free, premium-coated paper also preserves head performance long-term.
4. Receipts Fade or Become Unreadable Over Time
Likely Causes: Direct sunlight, high heat, or humid storage conditions can cause thermal coating to darken or fade over time. Lower-quality coatings are more susceptible to this.
Fix: Store receipts in a cool, dry, dark place. For long-term archival needs, choose a roll with a higher fade-resistance guarantee.
